Fashion Smarts

A conservative way to shop is by not riding the latest fashion graze; which is a never ending merry-go-round. In addition it is an endless cycle that leaves us with a lot of garments that we need to get rid of all the time. The best thing to do when shopping is to make sure we really want the items and only buy it if we plan to keep it for a long time. Purchasing apparel and accessories that we only use once or twice is far from a good decision for the environment; or for our pocket books, in the long run.

Shopping for clothes just for the latest fashion fads that come and go so quick is a major waste; especially when we are shopping for personal attire that will be in style for just that season and it takes 20 years for a come back. It's one thing for teenagers to want to keep up with the fashion graze but for grown ups to do it is wasteful, and a far stretch from wise shopping. You know those pieces that don't last. The outfits that need to be tossed out every season. They go out of style so fast while they are still new looking. Which leaves millions of tons of clothing dumped in the land fields each year. We don't want earth to be our dumping ground do we?

Having Fashion Smarts, is about purchasing apparel that doesn't go out of style, and in buying items that last. Instead of contributing to the heaping pile that is a never ending accumulation of clothing that we tend to find ourselves throwing out, or donating all the time.

The crazy mad rush out to buy the latest look can be a bit mindless later on when we look back in time at ourself in photos and we see some of the fashion fads we wore; we end up saying something like: gross! Or, What was I thinking? You know those clothing items, and accessories that we look back on and say, Yuck, that was so ugly. Even if it wasn't us wearing it.

It is best to stay away from those fashion fads that are here briefly and then out of style in a heart beat.

If we stay away from pieces that have designs, logos, ruffles, glimmer, shine and items that you know is a quick vogue and won't be in style very long. Than it is best to leave it on the store shelf, or left to hang on the clothing rack for the next fashion victim to purchase it instead of it being us.

A modern classic look is the best choice in a solid color. For example: a white button up shirt, black dress pants, and pearls are all classic looks. Take into consideration shoes and purses along with everything else for that timeless look that is here to stay.

You will want to purchase good quality clothes that you plan to hold on to. Even if you pay more for an item you will be better off in the long run because you are getting your money's worth. Make sure you really like it before you buy it. Wasteful spending is when you buy stuff that you might wear once or twice and that's it. Or clothing that you never end up wearing at all. The key is choosing to dress in a classic modern style that you enjoy wearing. Not only is it a wise choice financially but you will be reducing the land field waste.

Even more, we not only want our clothes to last but to fit properly as well. Remember to shop quality over quantity and buy good material that will hold up well. When you go out shopping and if you only see yourself wearing gear for a short period of time than forget it. Look for something else that is worth keeping around for as long as the material still looks rich in color and remains in good condition.

Ask yourself some of these questions:

a.) Will this last?

b.) Do I see myself wearing this in a year or two from now and still want to wear it?

c.) Will this item go out of style soon?

d.) Is the fabric good?

e.) Will I want to keep it?

f.) Is this a good buy?

g.) Can I afford it?

If you answer no to any of these questions than don't get it. Impulse shopping gives us items that we need to toss out or purchases that we regret. We don't want junk we want stuff worth having that is within our budget. It doesn't matter if you are rich or low income. Both types of people can enjoy clothing that will last. They just shop at different stores for their goods.

Make sure you get your correct size. Try it on before you buy it that will help eliminate having to return the item. By choosing to try on the items you will know exactly how it fits and looks on you. Take the time to evaluate before you purchase it and what better way to do that than to try it on. Furthermore, anyone that gets their moneys worth for an item or even for a ton of stuff is happy and feels great for being a smart shopper.

If you can fill up at least one garbage bag full of clothes that you need to get rid of every couple months than it is time to reconsider your spending / shopping habits. The main goal here is to reduce wasteful spending and to only buy clothing that you plan to keep for a good length of time and be happy doing so.
